Who We Are and What We Do

It all started at St. Abraam’s Coptic Orthodox Church in Peakhurst, where our weekly youth meetings are held.

Every Sunday night the youth of the church gather together in fellowship and enjoy a delicious meal, made with love and provided by the many cheerful givers of our congregation. Those who attend have always struggled with the massive volume of leftovers following each meeting; trays and trays of dinner, desserts, and drinks.

The thought of letting healthy and plentiful food go to waste was unbearable and extremely painful; we know that individuals in our communities and all over Sydney sleep each night craving just a loaf of bread.

St. Abraam - the patron saint of our church - was well known as “Friend of the Poor”. He focused most of his service on assisting and helping the poor, the disadvantaged, and the needy. Inspired by our patron saint, one of our church servants set out to turn our struggle into a blessing. We began planning and organizing weekly trips around Sydney to give out food and drink to the homeless and those in need.

Shortly after, more youths joined the service and more people volunteered to help and support our work. In no time, this small service turned into its own flourishing, registered charity; Christian Homeless Services.

Now, instead of distributing leftovers from the youth meeting, fresh and delicious meals are made with love weekly, every Sunday - especially for CHS. This is in addition to providing daily essentials, from hygiene products to clothing and books. We also prepare and distribute deluxe hampers & gift baskets on events like Christmas and Easter.

We thank our Lord Jesus for this incredible opportunity to carry on the legacy of St. Abraam here in Sydney, Australia.

We would love to hear from members of our community, other local charities & community services, and people looking to join us - our doors are always open!
